Cover Cropping
Cover crops or green manures are part of the regenerative solution. They are not new to agriculture, it is not radical thinking and is based on natural processes which occur in the soil. It is easily understood in its simplicity and fascinating in its complexity.
Cover cropping should not be viewed in isolation as it directly impacts all of the other cycles and processes, both chemical and natural which occur in healthy working soil. Science has shown that maximum potential and the tipping point for quorum sensing is reached through mixing 8 or more varieties in one field.
The benefits of cover cropping are numerous:
- Increased soil carbon
- Increased diversity, both above and below ground
- Reduced fertiliser use
- Pest (weeds, insects and nematodes) and disease reduction
- Improved yield through enhanced soil health
- Prevention of soil erosion
- Increased soil organic matter
- Conserved soil moisture
- Improved water quality
